Claude Code usage limits and what they cost
IC Guides · AI Agents · Coding agents
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. You do not buy it alone. It comes with a paid Claude plan, and what you pay depends on which plan you pick and how often you reach its limits. Anthropic publishes the plan prices and the shape of the limits. It does not publish their size, but it does publish enterprise spend benchmarks, which give a useful planning range.
The short answer
An individual developer starts at $20 a month on Pro. Heavy users move to Max from $100 a month. Teams choose between Standard seats at $25 and Premium seats at $125. Enterprise charges $20 a seat plus usage at API rates. Anthropic says its enterprise deployments average about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90% of users under $30 per active day.
Plans and prices
| Plan | Price on Anthropic’s pricing page | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not included |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | Included |
| Max | From $100 a month, in 5x and 20x tiers over Pro | Included |
| Team, Standard seat | $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed annually | Included |
| Team, Premium seat | $125 a seat a month, or $100 billed annually | Included, 5x the usage of a Standard seat |
| Enterprise | $20 a seat a month plus usage at API rates | Included |
How the limits work
Pro and Max have a five hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable models. The limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so a long chat in the Claude app uses the same allowance as a coding session.
Claude Code in an IDE such as VS Code or JetBrains counts toward the same limits. Anthropic gives warnings as you approach a limit, and the /status and /usage commands show how much you have left.
What happens when you hit a limit
- Wait for the window to reset.
- Enable usage credits, which let you keep working at standard API rates.
- Move up a tier, for example from Pro to Max 5x, or from Max 5x to Max 20x.
- Switch to a Console account and buy API credits for an intensive sprint.
Max plans include monthly API credits, but Anthropic states that these cannot be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for extra usage.
Two ways to be billed twice by accident
The first is an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set on your machine. Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, so you pay API rates and your plan goes unused, and Anthropic documents this in its help center.
The second comes after a limit. When you choose the API credit option, usage is billed at standard API rates, and auto reload in the Console can add more credit when your balance runs low.
Planning ranges from Anthropic’s figures
| Route | Monthly cost per developer | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 | Published price |
| Max entry | $100 and up | Published price |
| Team Premium seat | $125 | Published price |
| Enterprise, seat plus usage | $170 to $270 | $20 seat plus Anthropic’s $150 to $250 average usage range. Our arithmetic. |
These are planning ranges, not quotes. Anthropic stresses that cost varies with model choice, codebase size, and habits such as running several instances or automation, and recommends a pilot group to set a baseline.
Where costs surprise you
The page describes how the limits work and gives no sizes, so you cannot calculate how many tasks a plan covers. Two developers on the same plan can hit a limit at very different times. A team that hits weekly limits and turns on usage credits moves from a flat fee to API metering, which can cost more than a higher tier. Sharing one allowance between chat and coding also means non coding use can crowd out Claude Code.
Questions to ask before you buy
- How many hours of our real work does a five hour session cover, measured on a trial week?
- Do we expect to hit the weekly limit, and what would usage credits cost at API rates?
- Would a few Premium seats for heavy users cost less than moving everyone up?
- Is any developer’s environment sending an API key by default?
- For Enterprise, what does a pilot cohort cost at API rates, and who watches the spend?
