Compare session and weekly capacity, extra-use settings and the actual billing route before choosing Pro, Max or a team plan. ## Key terms **Subscription allowance**: Subscription allowance is usage included within a paid Claude plan’s limits. **Usage credits**: Usage credits is separately billed capacity used to continue beyond eligible plan limits. **API key**: API key is an authentication credential that can select a separately metered API billing route. IC Guides · AI Agents · Coding agents Documentation researchedNo hands-on testRechecked 25 October 2026 ## The short answer An individual developer starts at $20 a month on Pro. Heavy users move to Max from $100 a month. Teams choose between Standard seats at $25 and Premium seats at $125. The published Enterprise offer charges $20 a seat per month, billed annually with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. Anthropic says its enterprise deployments average about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90% of users under $30 per active day. ## Plans and prices | Plan | Price on Anthropic’s pricing page | Claude Code | | --- | --- | --- | | Free | $0 | Not included | | Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | Included | | Max | From $100 a month, in 5x and 20x tiers over Pro | Included | | Team, Standard seat | $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed annually | Included | | Team, Premium seat | $125 a seat a month, or $100 billed annually | Included, 5x the usage of a Standard seat | | Enterprise | $20 a seat a month, billed annually; 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates | Included | Caption: Plans and prices. The table sets out Plan, Price on Anthropic’s pricing page, Claude Code. ## How the limits work Pro and Max have a five hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable models. The limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so a long chat in the Claude app uses the same allowance as a coding session. Claude Code in an IDE such as VS Code or JetBrains counts toward the same limits. Anthropic gives warnings as you approach a limit, and the /status and /usage commands show how much you have left. ## What happens when you hit a limit - Wait for the window to reset. - Enable usage credits, which let you keep working at standard API rates. - Move up a tier, for example from Pro to Max 5x, or from Max 5x to Max 20x. - Switch to a Console account and buy API credits for an intensive sprint. Max plans include monthly API credits, but Anthropic states that these cannot be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for extra usage. ## Two ways to be billed twice by accident The first is an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set on your machine. Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, so you pay API rates and your plan goes unused, and Anthropic documents this in its help center. The second comes after a limit. When you choose the API credit option, usage is billed at standard API rates, and auto reload in the Console can add more credit when your balance runs low. ## Planning ranges from Anthropic's figures | Route | Monthly cost per developer | Basis | | --- | --- | --- | | Pro | $20 | Published price | | Max entry | $100 and up | Published price | | Team Premium seat | $125 | Published price | | Enterprise, seat plus usage | $170 to $270 | $20 seat plus Anthropic’s $150 to $250 average usage range. Our arithmetic. | Caption: Published subscriptions and Anthropic’s usage-planning figures, with the basis for each amount shown. These are planning ranges, not quotes. The Enterprise range assumes an active developer within a deployment meeting the published 20-seat annual minimum. That minimum alone is $400 a month equivalent before usage; a smaller team cannot assume it can buy only its active seat count. Anthropic stresses that cost varies with model choice, codebase size, and habits such as running several instances or automation, and recommends a pilot group to set a baseline. ## Where costs surprise you The page describes how the limits work and gives no sizes, so you cannot calculate how many tasks a plan covers. Two developers on the same plan can hit a limit at very different times. A team that hits weekly limits and turns on usage credits moves from a flat fee to API metering, which can cost more than a higher tier. Sharing one allowance between chat and coding also means non coding use can crowd out Claude Code. ## Read the right meter Claude Code’s API-token cost estimate is different from a bill for usage included in a subscription. The dollar estimate in the Session block of `/usage` is an API-token estimate, not an extra invoice for included Pro or Max usage. Read the plan usage bars for remaining subscription capacity. For API billing, check the Console's Usage page. ## Claude Code vs Devin Claude Code and Devin plan names do not imply equivalent quotas, reset windows or paid-extra-usage rules. A shared word such as “Max” does not mean the same allowance. Compare the reset windows, paid extra usage and work accepted after review. Give both tools the same scoped ticket and acceptance tests. Record retries and human review time alongside the bill. The [coding-agent comparison](/coding-agents-pricing/) covers team budgets. The [Devin plan guide](/guides/devin-pricing-explained/) explains its quotas and seat types. ## When to upgrade Use a trial week to record when limits interrupt useful work and what paid continuation costs. Compare the monthly plan difference with measured extra usage and delays. A higher tier is a capacity decision, not a promise of more accepted changes. ## Questions to ask before you buy - How many hours of our real work does a five hour session cover, measured on a trial week? - Do we expect to hit the weekly limit, and what would usage credits cost at API rates? - Would a few Premium seats for heavy users cost less than moving everyone up? - Is any developer's environment sending an API key by default? - For Enterprise, what does a pilot cohort cost at API rates, and who watches the spend? ## Claude Code usage FAQ ### Is Claude Code Max unlimited? No. Pro and Max have session and weekly limits. More capacity does not remove every limit. ### Does chat use my coding allowance? Yes. Claude and Claude Code share subscription limits, including supported IDE usage. ### Does the dollar amount in /usage mean I owe that amount? Not for usage included in Pro or Max. The Session block estimates API token cost. Check your subscription usage and billing route before treating it as an invoice. ### Can an API key cause separate charges? Yes. An ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable can make Claude Code use API billing instead of the included subscription allowance. IC Lab · AI Agent Pricing Tracker Vendor prices change.
