Workspace agents are shared agents inside ChatGPT that handle multi step work in the cloud. Teams can use them in ChatGPT or Slack. OpenAI describes them as an evolution of GPTs. This guide covers what OpenAI says about control and cost, and where its announcement leaves gaps.

Who has access

OpenAI’s announcement lists ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Teachers. It calls them generally available on Business, Enterprise and Edu in the headline, but its availability section says research preview on all four plans. The page does not resolve that, so confirm your plan’s status with OpenAI.

What administrators can control

For Enterprise and Edu, OpenAI describes controls over which connected tools and actions each user group can access, and over who can use, build and share agents through role based controls.

A Compliance API shows each agent’s configuration, updates and runs, and administrators can suspend agents.

OpenAI says an admin console view of all agents built in the organisation is planned.

Permissions and approvals

Users choose which tools and data an agent can use, which actions it can take, and when it needs approval. For sensitive steps such as editing a spreadsheet, sending an email or adding a calendar event, a user can require the agent to ask permission before it goes ahead. The announcement does not describe a broader approval system, so approval depends on how each agent is set up.

What it costs

OpenAI’s April 2026 announcement said workspace agents would be free until 6 May 2026, with credit based pricing after that. Secondary reports say OpenAI extended the free period on 22 May through its release notes, and that metering began on 6 July 2026. We did not read the release notes, so treat the dates below as reported, and check your admin console for what applies to your workspace today.

Reports say only agent runs invoked inside ChatGPT are metered. Runs triggered outside ChatGPT, such as an agent answering in Slack, stayed in free preview “for now”, with no end date announced.

Each run is reportedly charged across three token streams (input, cached input and output) at separate credit rates, so there is no fixed price per run.

OpenAI’s rate card, read on 19 October 2026, lists a Workspace Agents rate on GPT-5.6 of 100 credits per 1M input tokens, 10 per 1M cached input tokens and 500 per 1M output tokens, and says a typical run uses between 5 and 25 credits. On those rates, our arithmetic for 20,000 input, 80,000 cached and 5,000 output tokens is 2.0 + 0.8 + 2.5, or 5.3 credits. The 7.25 credit example reported earlier was on GPT-5.5 and does not match the current rate card. Workspace agents draw from the same credit pool as Codex and the ChatGPT Excel, PowerPoint and Word tools.

OpenAI’s rate card gives no dollar price per credit. Business, Edu and Enterprise workspaces can buy extra credits on top of the seat.

Here is our arithmetic. One daily run for a month is about 22 runs. At the reported 5 credits a run that is 110 credits, and at 25 credits it is 550, a fivefold spread before you know what a credit costs. Ten agents running hourly on weekdays would be 240 runs a day, or roughly 4,800 runs over 20 weekdays, and even the low end of 5 credits is 24,000 credits. Hourly schedules left over from the preview are the first place to look.

Ask OpenAI for the dollar price per credit, the credits included in your plan and what happens when the pool runs out.

Questions to ask before rollout

  1. Which plan are we on, and is the feature generally available for it?
  2. What do credits cost, and what does a typical run consume?
  3. Who may build and share agents, and who reviews them?
  4. Which actions require approval by default?
  5. Where do we see runs, and who can suspend an agent?
